With its global production network the Danish company GPV is providing cost-effective and reliable solutions for OEMs all over the world

What started out as a metal plate workshop in a Copenhagen suburb in the early sixties has grown to one of Europe’s leading EMS companies. With Electronics and Mechanics sites in Denmark, Thailand and Mexico GPV has a work force of 1,400 people all specialized in manufacturing advanced, high-mix/low medium volume products. Plant Manager Anders Thomsen explains:

- Our customers are globally oriented enterprises within regulated industries and are characterized by their high demands for quality and documentation with a need for customer-specific logistics solutions.

For some years, GPV International was supplying national customers but eventually the company was looking outside Denmark for growing the business and with a huge success:

- With an export share of 90 percent GPV is dependent on foreign operations and the development in our production structure clearly demonstrates this: Just ten years ago the Danish operations were twice the size of the Thai operations and today the latter is four times the size of the Danish operations. Nevertheless, GPV is today the biggest EMS supplier in Denmark.

Going to Mexico
For decades, the production sites were split up into two sites in Denmark and two in Thailand but in 2017 GPV International established a production site in Mexico as well. This brought the company closer to the important markets in North America. Mr. Thomsen elaborates:

- Setting up a solid Best Cost manufacturing base in Mexico was a strategic decision for GPV International based upon a wish to follow our customers and increase our business in the US and Canada. Our Guadalajara facility will ensure this and we are now present in the three major time zones.

Complex Radar Technology
In the late 1990’s GPV’s Management made a decision to enter the defense market which was regarded to represent a growth potential. In 2019 the company’s defense market is concentrated on naval radars, including large 3 by 3 meter mechanical precision assemblies with tolerances down to just 0.05 mm.

GPV also operates column assembly for Active Phased Array radar in clean room, high precision PCBA with printed circuit boards with embedded components, sourcing and production, module tests and assembly of ITAR regulated components/products as well as mechanical and electrical tests of the final item.

Acquired by Schouw & Co.
In January 2016, GPV was acquired by the Danish industrial conglomerate Schouw & Co. Following the acquisition significant investment in a new line of business with the aim of developing GPV in the long term through a combination of organic growth and possibly further acquisitions. A strategy that soon materialized.

GPV is to Acquiring CCS Group
In October 2018 it was announced that GPV has agreed to acquire the Swiss EMS company CCS Group which is headquartered in Lachen, Switzerland . The transaction will lift GPV International’s revenue to about DKR 2.6bn // USD 400m and place the company among the top tier of EMS companies in Europe employing 3.700 people. Plant Manager Anders Thomsen elaborates:

- The acquisition of CSS is a substantial complementary market fit and both companies has an excellent customer portfolio with very similar go-to-market approach and a strong combination of in-house capabilities.   The merger will officially take effect on New Years Day 2019 and the company will be headquartered in Tarm, Denmark.
